Department of Veterinary Biochemistry
About
The Department of Veterinary Biochemistry at Bihar Veterinary College, Patna, was established as an independent academic entity in the 1980s, following its separation from the Department of Physiology. Since its inception, the department has remained at the forefront of undergraduate and postgraduate education, while also playing a significant role in research and clinical diagnostics in the field of Veterinary Biochemistry.
Over the years, the department has steadily expanded its infrastructure and research capabilities to meet the evolving demands of veterinary education. It is fully equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and facilities in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) under the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (MSVE). At present, the department is staffed by four highly qualified biochemists who are dedicated to delivering high-quality education and mentoring to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department functions under the dynamic leadership of Dr. R.A. Siddique, Professor and Head of the Department.
To fulfil its academic and research objectives, the department houses several specialized laboratories. The Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory facilitates blood biochemical profiling, a critical component in the diagnosis and management of livestock health. The Molecular Biology and Enzymology Laboratories engage in advanced research in genomics, proteomics, and enzymology to address contemporary challenges in animal health and disease. An in-vitro culture facility supports cellular and molecular-level investigations, enabling experimental studies in cell biology and tissue culture.
The major thrust areas of the department include cancer biology and the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of nanotechnology. With the establishment of a Biophysics and Nanotechnology Laboratory, the department is actively promoting interdisciplinary research at the intersection of biochemistry, molecular biology, and nanoscience. Through its integrated approach to education, research, and clinical application, the Department of Veterinary Biochemistry continues to contribute significantly to the advancement of veterinary biomedical sciences.
