About the Department
The Department of Livestock Production Management (LPM) is a core academic, research and extension unit of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kishanganj. It focuses on scientific, sustainable and economically viable management practices for domestic animal species to optimize productivity while maintaining animal welfare.
The department follows the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (MSVE) 2016 curriculum prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India for undergraduate education. Students receive theoretical instruction and practical demonstrations to develop a comprehensive understanding of livestock production management.
The department primarily offers undergraduate education and training. Postgraduate studies have also commenced at CoVAS, Kishanganj, including the postgraduate programme in Livestock Production Management.
The department undertakes extension activities such as Kisan Samvad, farmer training, advisory services, workshops and field demonstrations. These initiatives promote the transfer of technologies from laboratory to field and support livestock farmers in the Seemanchal region of Bihar.
Livestock production; climate-resilient animal housing; flooring systems; space optimization; heat and cold stress management; animal behaviour and welfare; reproduction and fertility management; composting of dead birds and slaughter waste; biogas and biodiesel generation from farm waste; and reduction of the environmental footprint of livestock production.
