About


The department Livestock Production Management established in year 2022-2023 and is engaged in teaching 02 courses (LPM- 2nd year B. Sc. (Ag) students in DKAC Arrabari Kishanganj, LPM- 1st Professional B. V. Sc. & A. H., students) research and extension. Besides this department also involved in farm practical training, infrastructure developed for livestock farm practices training. Faculties of department involved in publication of 8 manuals along with other publications. Department offers livestock production management courses comprising of paper-I (Unit- I, II, III, IV and V) and Paper-II (VI, VII, VIII & IX) as per MSVE-2016 guidelines. The course is 4+2 credit hours and currently 80 students are enrolled in B. V. Sc. & A.H., 1st professional B. V. Sc. students. Department is well equipped and prepared to teach Livestock farm practices courses.  Department is also prepared and ready for entrepreneurship and internee training. Department is also ready for offering M. V. Sc. And Ph.D., courses.  This department is also imparting training to the farmers through various shibirs and camps organized by college, university, banks etc.

Mandate


  • To strive hard and provide leadership in teaching, research, extension education and services associated with livestock production management and to keep pace with recent advances and relevant developments
  • To produce qualified and competent graduates having basic knowledge and understanding of scientific handling and rearing of livestock
  • To offer advisory and consultancy services for strengthening scientific livestock management practices for farmers

Future goal and Strategies:

The overall goal of department is to produce trained graduates to assist poverty alleviation of rural people through motivation, creating opportunities and awareness. To carryout research in animal sciences as per location specific needs to evolve relevant package of practices. Management strategies are developed to standardize housing system, stocking rate and feeding as per scientific requirement

Facilities


  • One UG laboratory with instruments as per VCI guidelines along with class room facilities for 100 students,
  • One museum for models of housing, different breeds of cattle buffaloes horse chicken and charts of breeds and anatomical structures of animals.
  • One smart seminar room of capacity of 50 along with different gadgets.

Research Activities


Following thrust area for research will be explored-  

  • Area specific, need-based livestock management practices for different species of livestock i.e., cattle, buffalo, goat, rabbit and poultry under different farming systems.
  • Application of animal behaviour and welfare science as a productivity augmenting tool.
  • Morphometric and biometric traits of livestock.
  • Information and communication tools (Mobile Applications, Web portals, expert systems etc.) for farmers, students and scientists.
  • Livestock waste management, recycling, up cycling, odour management and to explore new avenues for the value addition of livestock wastes.
