Brief Introduction

Dr Umesh Singh has joined as Dean, Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology, BASU, Patna on 01/04/2024. Dr Singh is a noted Scientist and Academician of high repute in the field of Animal Science and Dairy Science with specialization in Animal Genetics and Breeding. Dr Singh was born on 6th March 1965 in a village of Bangali Dist., Mau (UP). Dr Singh had his initial education from Ranipur Inter College, Mau. Dr Singh did his graduation and post-graduation from NDUA&T, Kumarganj, Ayodhya in the year 1986 and 1989 respectively. He was awarded Doctorate degree in Animal Breeding from College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Palampur, HP in the year 1993. Dr Singh has undergraduate teaching experience of 7 years and teaching/ research experience of 29 years. He started his professional carrier as Assistant Professor, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Anjora, Durg of IGKV, Raipur, MP. (1994 to 2000) and then joined as Senior Scientist (AG&B), North Temperate Regional Station of ICAR-CSWRI, Avikanagar in a year 2000. He got transferred to ICAR-Project Directorate on cattle, Meerut during 2003 and subsequently, in the year 2008, he got promoted as Principal Scientist and selected as Principal Scientist (AG&B) in the year 2009 also.

Dr Singh worked as Head, Division of Cattle Genetics and Breeding from 05/12/2017 to 04/12/2023 and also looked after as Incharge, AICRP on Cattle for about 10 years. Dr Singh also worked as Director (Acting), Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut for about 8 months.   Dr Singh got selected as Head, Division of Animal Genetics and Breeding, ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes, Hisar, Haryana and joined on 30/10/2023.

Involved in development of FrieswalTM, a national milch cattle breed in collaboration with Ministry of Defence. As Principal Investigator of the Indigenous Breeds Project, actively engaged in the genetic improvement of important Indigenous cattle breeds viz., Gir, Kankrej and Sahiwal in collaboration of SAU/SVU/NGOs/Gaushala/Farmers and made notable contribution in improving the milk productivity of cattle from 20-35 % over the past 10 years in the farmer herds. The Frieswal has been registered as synthetic cattle breed during 2024 and his contribution has been acknowledged.

Dr Singh handled 18 research projects and also involved as Co-PI in 4 externally funded projects. He has published more than 142 research articles in reputed national and international journals, 25 popular articles  and delivered 12 invited lectures also. Contributed as author/co-author of 10 books, 15 book chapters, 2 Monograph and 5 bulletins. Organized 3 Seminars/Symposium/Conferences and 5 training programmes for the Mid- Career Scientist/Teachers sponsored by DBT and ICAR. Guided M. V. Sc. and Ph. D. students of Animal Genetics & Breeding. Dr Singh organized mega event as Krishi Mela and Pashu Pradarshani at Muzaffarnagar (UP) in collaboration with DAHD, Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry and dairying, New Delhi on 6-7 April, 2023.

Involved in development of six technologies filed for Indian patent and obtained trademark FRIESWALTM. Also involved in application of ICT in cattle research through the development of “SIReDAM” – An online data entry software for management of dairy animal data. A total of 03 Patents have been granted and one copyright of SIReDAM software has also been granted. During his committed and illustrious career spanning over 20 years at ICAR-CIRC, Meerut, Dr Singh developed innovative and need-based technologies in the form of National patents (03), technology transfer (05).

Dr Singh delivered 15 Radio/TV talks. He has been reviewer for many peer reviewed Journals (04).

Dr Singh has been honoured as Fellow of NADS(I), Karnal, SOCDAB, Karnal, RAASA, New Delhi and ISNS, Chennai and also awarded for Excellence in Research, Reviewer Excellence Award and many, best oral and poster presentation awards. Dr Singh served as Member, Institute Management Committee of ICAR-CIRC, Meerut, ICAR-CIRG, Mathura, ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal and ICAR-CSWRI, Avikanagar and executive members, Society for Conservation of Domestic Animal Biodiversity, Karnal and Indian Society of Animal Genetics & Breeding. He also acted as Secretary, QRT, ICAR-PDC, Meerut and Co-chaired many technical sessions in Seminar/Symposium. Dr Singh acted as member of selection committee for the post of Assistant and associate Professor and also acted as Governor Nominee for the promotion of Professor under CAS. Dr Singh also served as a member for the promotion of the scientists under CAS.
