Department of Animal Nutrition
College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Arrabari, Kishanganj, Bihar, India
About the Department
The Department of Animal Nutrition was established in 2023 as an independent unit following the establishment of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Arrabari, Kishanganj. The college was inaugurated on August 24, 2022.
Animal nutrition plays a vital role in animal health, welfare, livestock productivity and the nutritional quality of animal products. Feed is the largest single cost item in livestock and poultry production, accounting for approximately 60–70% of total production costs.
The department focuses on the dietary requirements of animals, conventional and unconventional feed resources, feed and fodder technology, nutrient utilization, metabolic disorders and scientific feeding practices. It provides practical and theoretical instruction to undergraduate students in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.
The Animal Nutrition Laboratory includes the Feeds and Fodder Analysis Laboratory and the Energy Metabolism Laboratory. These facilities support practical classes, nutrient analysis of locally available feed and fodder, hay making, preparation of urea-ammoniated straw, area-specific mineral mixture preparation and research activities.
Samples of conventional and unconventional livestock feed ingredients are maintained for demonstration. Field and farm visits help students understand scientific feeding practices and current technologies used in the feed industry.
Animal Nutrition, Feed and Fodder Technology, Feed Quality Assessment, Balanced Ration Formulation, Complete Feed Blocks, Bypass Protein and Fat, Feed Additives, Nutraceuticals, Climate-Resilient Feeding Strategies and Sustainable Livestock Production.
