Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology (BSIDT) , formerly known as Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology (SGIDT), Patna, was established by the Government of Bihar vide Resolution No. 2813 dated 14 December 1980.

The first batch of undergraduate students in Dairy Technology was admitted in 1982 at Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, Samastipur. The Institute was shifted to Patna in 1986 and subsequently moved to its own campus at Jagdeo Path, Patna in 1999.

From 2010 to 2017, the Institute functioned as a constituent unit of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour. Following the establishment of Bihar Animal Sciences University, the Institute became a constituent unit of BASU.

BSIDT is engaged in teaching, research and extension activities covering Dairy Technology, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Extension Education and Dairy Business Management.
