Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC)
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC) of Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU), Patna is a statutory institutional committee constituted to oversee and regulate research involving biological agents and modern biotechnology in accordance with the biosafety guidelines issued by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The IBSC of Bihar Animal Sciences University has been registered with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, on 27 September 2023 with Registration No. LG-01-16/2016/169.
Objectives
The primary objective of the IBSC is to ensure that all research involving biological materials is conducted in a safe, ethical, and environmentally responsible manner while complying with the applicable national biosafety regulations.
Scope of Oversight
The IBSC reviews and monitors research activities involving:
- Recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology
- Genetically Engineered/Genetically Modified Organisms (GEOs/GMOs)
- Hazardous microorganisms and infectious biological agents
- Pathogenic microorganisms
- Infected animals and biological specimens
- Biological toxins and other regulated biological materials
- Any research requiring biosafety assessment as per DBT guidelines
Functions of the IBSC
The Institutional Biosafety Committee is responsible for:
- Reviewing and approving research proposals involving regulated biological materials and recombinant DNA technology.
- Ensuring compliance with the biosafety guidelines issued by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.
- Conducting biosafety risk assessment and recommending appropriate containment measures.
- Monitoring approved research projects to ensure adherence to approved biosafety practices.
