About the Department
The Department of Animal Genetics & Breeding came into existence in 2023 as an independent unit following the establishment of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kishanganj, on 24 August 2022.
Animal Genetics and Breeding is a core subject of veterinary education, with significant theoretical and practical importance. The department teaches the basic principles of genetics and animal breeding, along with biostatistics and computer applications, according to the syllabus prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India.
Students receive theoretical instruction as well as practical demonstrations. The department offers undergraduate courses and postgraduate programmes leading to M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Genetics and Breeding.
The department also undertakes extension activities, including Kisan Samvad and awareness programmes on animal genetic resources. Students are encouraged to explore and document unrecognized and non-descript animal genetic resources available in local areas.

Education and Training
To advance education and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Animal Genetics and Breeding.
Research and Genetic Improvement
To conduct research for genetic improvement of livestock and avian genetic resources through breeding programmes suited to specific needs.
Knowledge Dissemination
To disseminate research-based knowledge on livestock and poultry improvement and conservation to farmers and other stakeholders.
