About Bihar Veterinary College

Bihar Veterinary College, Patna, the 5th oldest Veterinary College in undivided India, was founded on 2nd April, 1927 by Sir Henry Wheeler, the then Governor of Bihar & Orissa.

The buildings were completed, laboratories were equipped and teaching and professional staff joined the institution in 1930. However, the College started functioning with effect from 7th April, 1927.

The College made tremendous progress under the guidance and supervision of Dr. R. T. Davis, the first Principal of this historic institution, supported by renowned scientists specializing in breeding, feeding, management and disease control of livestock and poultry species.

During the post-independence period, Bihar Veterinary College developed into a prestigious centre for veterinary education, research and advanced clinical services. Its academic and professional contributions have served Bihar as well as several other states and neighbouring countries.

The College has a distinguished legacy of teaching, research, clinical service, livestock development and human resource development in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.

Legacy & Development

Historical Journey

In the beginning, from 1930 to 1949, the College offered a three-year diploma course leading to the G.B.V.C. (Graduate of Bihar Veterinary College) Diploma. Keeping pace with advancement in science and technology, a four-year degree programme leading to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree was introduced in 1949.

An emergency Diploma-Shift-Degree course was introduced during 1954-55. The professional competency of diploma holders was further upgraded through a two-year condensed degree course leading to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree.

The first batch of regular degree students admitted in 1949 graduated in 1953. The postgraduate programme in different subjects of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry was started in 1960.

Under the Bihar Agricultural University Act, 1971, Bihar Veterinary College became one of the pioneer constituent colleges of Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa. Later, with the development of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, Bhagalpur in 2010, the College continued as an important constituent institution with its academic, research and clinical infrastructure.

From 2017, Bihar Veterinary College became part of Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU), continuing its historic role in veterinary education, research and extension activities in Bihar.
