Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology (BSIDT)
Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology (BSIDT), formerly known as the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology (SGIDT), Patna, was established by the Government of Bihar vide Resolution No. 2813 dated 14 December 1980. The first batch of undergraduate students in the Dairy Technology programme was admitted in 1982 at Rajendra Agricultural University (RAU), Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar. The Institute was shifted to Patna in 1986 and finally moved to its own campus at Jagdeo Path, Patna in the year 1999. Following the bifurcation of Rajendra Agricultural University, the Institute functioned as a constituent unit of Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, Bhagalpur, from 2010 to 2017. Subsequently, with the establishment of Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU), Patna, under the Bihar Animal Sciences University Act, 2016 (Bihar Act No. 15 of 2016), as notified in the Bihar Gazette on 29 August 2016, the Institute became a constituent unit of BASU.
The Institute is actively engaged in teaching, research, and extension activities covering diverse disciplines of dairy science and technology, including Dairy Technology, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Extension Education, Dairy Business Management.
Academics
The Institute offers a four-year undergraduate programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech. (Dairy Technology)]. In addition, a four-year B.Tech. (Food Technology) programme has been introduced from the academic session 2026–27. The academic curricula are aligned with the recommendations of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, and have been implemented in accordance with the recommendations of the VIth Deans’ Committee since 2025-26 session. The Institute also offers two-years’ degree – Master of Technology [M.Tech.] in Dairy Technology, Dairy Chemistry, and Dairy Microbiology and recently introduced in the Departments of Dairy Business Management and Dairy Extension Education.
